“You can’t predict where inspiration is going to come from,” God Friended Me executive producer Bryan Wynbrandt told the Television Critics Association in a recent interview. In the instance of the new CBS drama, the inspiration came from a friend request Wynbrandt received while he was on his way to visit Steve Lilien, the show’s other executive producer. Creative genius would strike as the two talked about all that could happen if someone claiming to be God sent them a friend request.
Thus, God Friended Me was born. The new CBS drama premieres this Sunday, September. 30 (8:30-9:30 PM, ET and 8:00-9:00 PM, PT).
Actor Brandon Micheal Hall, who stars as Miles Finer on the new CBS drama, says the show is “not a religious show,” but is “more of a spiritual show… that asks the ultimate question: ‘Is there something greater than ourselves….’”
God Friended Me is an uplifting and fun show that follows bright-eyed Miles Finer, a staunch atheist who receives a Facebook friend request from “God.” After repeated pokes from “God,” Miles finally accepts the request. Curiosity takes over and Miles begins to explore “God’s” friend suggestions. With the help of his sister, best friend Rakesh, friend Ali and new friend Cara (who he met through “God’s” friend suggestions), Miles and his crew are set on proving that the account is a hoax. In the meantime, Miles, who is kind and caring at heart, finds his life is turned upside down, as he unwittingly takes time out of his life to help two of the new friends he meets from the “God” account, changing their lives and destinies.
The love of Miles Finer’s life is his podcast, The Millennial Prophet, where he speaks his mind on just about everything including his strong disbelief in a higher power and devoting many segments to debunking religious beliefs. This rejection of God puts him at constant odds with his father, Rev. Arthur Finer, the long-time pastor of Trinity Church of Harlem, played by Joe Morton.
Handsome 25 year old actor Brandon Micheal Hall grew up in the church. He told CBS This Morning that being in church all the time inspired him to become an actor: “I would sit and watch the preacher and be rapt in how he would take the ancient text and people would go off and talk about it and come back changed and feeling different. Then when I went to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, I remember I was doing a play, and there were two people in the front row, and they were watching like this, the same way that I was watching the pastor. And that was that moment I was like, I’m doing something, I’m connecting, I’m reaching people. I’d found a purpose.”
Brandon Micheal Hall is best known from his leading role on the ABC hour-long comedy “The Mayor” where he starred as rapper/Mayor Courtney Rose. The show, which was inspired by the Trump presidency, follows the aspiring rapper who ran for Mayor only to bring attention to his new rap CD.
“God Friended Me” will air on Sundays at 8:30pm ET and 8:00pm PT and also stars Violett Beane, Suraj Sharma and Javicia Leslie.
